Save the rare endemic beauty of Bel Ombre: 1 euro for each 1 m2 of forest restored

The Domaine de Bel Ombre is one of the most preserved and natural location in Mauritius and has been involved for several years

with the restoration of good native forests which contributes to increase the area of native forest (less than 2% in Mauritius) and to

improve and provide quality habitat for the endemic birds.

During the last 6 years, the Domaine de Bel Ombre has weeded out invasive alien plants from about 30 ha of forest on 3 sites: Bel

Ombre, Chamarel and Case Noyale. It has also been supporting the Rare Plants & Birds/Animals Project of the Mauritian Wildlife

Foundation, and the restored areas contain Critically Endangered plants of Mauritius (eg Jumellea recurva).

The Bel Ombre region bordering the Black River Gorges National Park contains endemic forest of good quality; as example, Valriche

Forest is be classified as grade A forest (>50% native plant diversity). Over the 670 native species of flowering plant found in

Mauritius, the Valriche plot includes 123 native plants, 3 of them are critically endangered plants (Dictyosperma album, Pisonia

lanceolata, Gouania tiliifolia) and 41 are also classified endangered plants. Without any conservation management programmes,

those threatened plants could decline further or become extinct.

In addition, Bel Ombre forest is home to the main threatened

endemic birds such as Mauritius Kestrel Falco punctatus, Pink Pigeon Nesoenas mayeri and Echo Parakeet Psittacula eques and

endemic passerines eg Mauritius Bulbul Hypsipetes olivaceus.

Frederica Nature Reserve provides our visitors with the opportunity to experience the biodiversity of fauna and flora through its

leisure activities at the Domaine de Bel Ombre.

The Domaine de Bel Ombre is committed to pursue its work in the preservation of the biodiversity of Mauritius by continuing the

forest restoration and increasing the area of forest restored.

The cost for the weed out of the invasive alien plants and the maintenance of 1 ha during 5 years is approximately MUR 500,000. So,

each fifty rupees will contribute to the native forest restoration of 1 m2 for 5 years.

Bel Ombre Foundation for Empowerment is a non‐profit organization and the fundraising association for the native forest

restoration at the Domaine de Bel Ombre.

The Royal Raid 2015 organization will donate to the Bel Ombre Foundation for Empowerment Rs. 50 for each registration to the RR

15 km. Moreover, we invite you to donate freely to help us to preserve the biodiversity.
